Each year, we prepare for the Feast of St. Padre Pio on September 23 with nine days of prayer known as the St. Padre Pio Novena.
The word novena comes from the Latin word for “nine.” A novena is a Catholic tradition of praying for nine consecutive days, bringing our intentions before God and asking for His grace. The tradition has its roots in the early Church, when the Apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary devoted themselves to prayer in the days between the Ascension of Jesus and Pentecost.
Our novena begins on September 14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and leads us toward the September 23 feast of St. Padre Pio. This is especially fitting because the Cross of Christ was at the heart of Padre Pio’s spirituality. His life was marked by deep prayer, love for the Eucharist, devotion to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, charity toward others, and a willingness to unite his sufferings to Christ.
We do not pray to St. Padre Pio as though he were God. We ask him to intercede for us, just as we ask a friend or fellow Christian to pray for us. Ultimately, every grace comes from God.
The St. Padre Pio Novena is an opportunity to slow down, pray intentionally, bring our needs and hopes before the Lord, and ask for the intercession of a saint who spent his life seeking to become more like Christ.
During these nine days, consider bringing God your own intentions, whether you are praying for your family, your friends, your school, your struggles, your vocation, a particular need, or simply a deeper relationship with Jesus.
Most of all, pray for the grace to live like Padre Pio: rooted in prayer, faithful to the Eucharist, quick to seek God's mercy, courageous in faith, generous in charity, and willing to follow Christ wherever He leads.
Join us for nine days of prayer as we prepare to celebrate our patron, St. Padre Pio.
St. Padre Pio, pray for us!
